Types of Mental Health Treatment Provided
Depression and mood disorders:
Depression is the most common mental health issue among American adults, which is why it is often referred to as the ‘common cold’ of psychiatry. There is nothing benign about depression, however, and rarely will it simply clear up on its own as a cold would. Despite both the physical and emotional suffering experienced by people with depression, only a third of the population seeks professional help to address it. Of those that do, however, 80% find improvement and healing. Don’t wait – if you feel you may be suffering from depression, consult a health care provider or contact me for a brief assessment of your symptoms.
Anxiety and dysfunctional coping:
Anxiety can be a debilitating mental health condition, and causes and symptoms can vary widely among individuals, from racing thoughts to panic attacks. Developing coping skills and exploring triggers can be an effective way to control anxiety. Despite the availability of effective treatment, less than 40% of individuals suffering from anxiety seek help.
Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme changes in mood between elevated mania and deep depression. Bipolar disorder affects millions of people world-wide, and learning to recognize the mood changes and to limit the often destructive behavior associated with them, along with medication, is key to managing this illness.
Psychosis and thought distortion:
I have spent much of my career working with individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders such as Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective disorder. My experience has given me unique insight into how to help and support those suffering with severe mental health conditions, as well as helping family members understand and cope with their loved one’s symptoms and behavior. I am willing to provide in-home assessment and support to those who are unable or unwilling to attend a traditional in-office counseling session, as well as case management in the form of linking to community resources.
Adoption work:
My interest in adoption work began early in my life when our family became complete with the addition of an adopted brother. As a professional, I worked with the adoption program at Catholic Charities and I completed research on several areas of adoption during my master's program. I provide thorough, in-depth home studies to prospective adoptive parents, and I am available during evening and weekend hours.
